‘I had a dream last night that I had gills instead of lungs.’
MEDUSA is a chamber opera is a contemporary retelling of the Greek myth of Medusa. A diverse group of singers and dancers are transforming the stage to give voice to the woman that historically has been portyed as the 'monster'. Opera, Dance, Puppetry and Video Mapping blent to compose a deconstructed shipwreck of girlhood and “monsterhood”. This new libretto focuses on Medusa’s own story before her encounter with Perseus and aims to raise awareness on childhood sexual abuse through opera making.
This performance will be semi-staged.
A Foreword from the Librettist Jess McNulty:
''Megan Nolan in ‘The Functions of Female Rage’ talks about a rage which is ‘unfocussed’, and I really love that image, of an anger that does not have to have a use to be justified. At the end, Medusa’s anger is a stark contrast to her naivety and girlhood at the beginning of the opera, something which she is also deeply aware of. It is an anger which she knows might overcome her, but also one which is a scream against the injustice of her story and that is born out of a deep desire to protect herself and her sisters.'
Reviews
The Reviews Hub - Bobbie-Jean Henning
"The opera’s orchestration is both evocative and charming. Goi Ywei Chern successfully captures the naivety of the young Medusa, the playful nature of the sea and the weight of the emotional moments in the story. "
Theatre Weekly - Ke Meng
"an evocative soundscape that captures the characters’ psychological turmoil, at times reminiscent of Francis Poulenc."
Everything Theatre - Chanelle June
"Composer Goi Ywei Chern’s score elevates each scene with precision; a delicate accompaniment to Medusa’s grief, or a far-off thunderstorm to herald Poseidon’s return."
"This is a stunning reimagining of a well-trodden story, uplifted by an excellent score, captivating performances, and a reminder of the true tragedy of Medusa — that she was ever forced to become a monster in the first place."

Reviews
pianomania - Chang Tou Liang
"Of special significance was the Asian premiere of young Singaporean composer Goi Ywei Chern’s Qart Hadasht (New City), representing the most modern music in the concert. Its four varied movements, inspired by landmarks of historical Carthage, involved a compendium of virtuoso techniques on Alvarez’s alto flute. The overall effect was exotic, mystical and hauntingly beautiful. "

Reviews
Planet Hugill - Robert Hugill
"Letter From Heaven by Goi Ywei Chern (music) and Yvonne Ugarte (words), performed by Anusha Merrin (soprano) and Chunmeng Ge (piano), was one of the most impressive songs of the event. A moment suspended in time, Merrin's high soprano managed to project an impressive number of words. A concentrated performance creating something intense and evocative."
